Coalition to Empower our Future Board Members Call On Platforms To Follow Landmark Reforms

Washington, D.C. – Today, Coalition to Empower our Future Board Members, former Montana Governor and Attorney General Steve Bullock, former U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo and Dr. Caroline Carney released the following statements urging platforms to follow landmark reforms agreed to by the states and Meta.

“As the former governor and attorney general of Montana, the recent agreement between the states and Meta addresses what parents and young people have been asking for – comprehensive tools that empower parents and teach young people how to use emerging technologies safely and responsibly,” said former Montana Governor and Attorney General Steve Bullock. “It is time for platforms like YouTube, Snapchat, Discord, TikTok and others that young people regularly use to follow suit and adopt similar measures. Having all such platforms use the same guardrails for young people will make a lasting impact on the wellbeing of our children.” 

“As a father of two and former member of Congress, I applaud the state attorneys general and Meta for taking a meaningful step toward giving parents more tools to help their children navigate the digital world safely,” said former Congressman Carlos Curbelo. “Other platforms where teens spend time, from TikTok to YouTube to Snapchat and others, must examine these solutions and adopt similar measures that empower parents and support young people’s wellbeing.”

“Addressing the complex roots of the youth mental health challenge requires practical and comprehensive solutions,” said Dr. Caroline Carney, board-certified internist and psychiatrist. “I’m encouraged to see the states and Meta agree on meaningful steps to support youth wellbeing through enhanced age assurance measures, screentime limits and other tools that, in my years as a psychiatrist, I know can make a lasting difference in the lives of our children. Other platforms that young people spend the most time on must now examine these solutions and adopt similar measures.”
